Route 66 Adventure.

This cross country trip on my Harley has been in my head for years. Originally, I was going to take it in the spring of last year but cancer got in the way. Earlier this year I decided to do the LiveStrong Challenge so it got put off until now. It is a dream come true, one of many that I am blessed to have experienced.
I dedicate this trip to Patti, my favorite wife, who I'm sure doesn't always understand but always loves and supports me.
It is also dedicated to my friend, Sue, as she recovers from a serious bicycle accident. LiveStrong Sue!

I hope that all of you will enjoy the trip along with me!

Chicago to the Home of Lincoln

When Harley sent us the itinerary for this trip, I wondered why they would only schedule for short distances each day. After we took 8+ hours to go 220 miles yesterday, I don't wonder anymore. 66 is not a highway as we know it today but mostly a 2 lane paved road that winds through several little towns and has long, straight sections in between. Along the way, there are so many places to stop and explore. From drive in resturaunts (I recommend the chili cheese fries at the Polka Dot Diner in Braidwood) to the restored 30's era gas stations to the Route 66 Museum in Pontiac, we didn't spend long periods of time in the saddle. As you travel this road, it is hard to imagine people in the 30's and 40's and into the 50's using this road as the primary means of travel from the mid west to the west coast. When we arrived in Springfield, the party at the local Harley dealer was in full swing and the featured food was Cozy (don't call them corn dogs) dogs, a local favorite. I can tell my diet is done for!
This morning we'll be exploring Springfield and taking in some of the Abraham Lincoln history it has to offer, then on to St. Louis.
